Roommate
“Oh hello then. Who are you?” asked a young man with a British accent. Blue nearly fainted. She was not so sure about sharing a room with someone who was male. Teddy simply smiled slyly.
“Lucky you,” he whispered, though Blue couldn't tell if he was being sarcastic or not, then waved to the boy. “This is Blue, your new roommate,” he said, then turned to Blue, “and this is Alec. He's British.”
“Nice to meet you,” Alec said, holding his hand out to Blue. Blue took his hand and shook it, blushing despite herself. What would sharing a room with a guy from Britain bring? She wasn't sure she wanted to know.
“Yeah,” Blue mumbled. Teddy grinned to himself and backed out of the room, waving goodbye to Blue as he left. She glared at the place he'd been previously and kicked the door. Alec gave her a questioning look, and she blinked at him.
“So where are you from?” he asked, as she looked over what he'd been doing. On his bed there was this strange book with a star on the front.
Blue blinked, finally mumbling, “Wisconsin?” she offered.
“Really?” Alec mumbled. Blue shrugged. She couldn't remember where she was from. She was much too distracted by the set-up of the room. Alec's half seemed to be shrouded in darkness, while her half of the room looked totally bare. There were books all around the room and a cauldron near the window. Which had bars over it. That just seemed a little odd. “Are you listening?” the Brit asked, and Blue shook her head as she tried to remember what she'd done with her things. Were her parents going to bring them by? How long would it take to decorate that half of the room? ...Was that a shrunken head?
“Soooo,” Blue mumbled, blinking repeatedly.
“You're from Wisconsin then?” Alec questioned. Blue shook her head, and Alec blinked at her in confusion.
“Hrrr,” she mumbled, entranced by the various things lying on Alec's side of the room. Finally she managed one word, “Class?”
“Why am I not in class?” Alec asked, and Blue nodded. “I don't believe it's healthy to go to class every day.”
“Uh huh,” Blue mumbled, slowly walking over to her side of the room and sitting down on the empty bed. She stared at the window and pondered the bars, trying to get her thoughts in order enough to speak intelligibly to Alec. Wait, was something moving? She stared underneath Alec's bed intently, trying to decide if she was just seeing things.
“Oh, come on out,” he said, and Blue crawled backward into her bed as what she thought was a vicious looking rat crawled out. Blue tried to smile at Alec and the rat, but found it was just impossible. He held the rat up to Blue, introducing it, “This is Scamps.” Blue nodded as Alec extended his arm, thereby pushing the rat toward her.
“Ahaha,” Blue laughed awkwardly. “Cool,” she mumbled. She took her right hand and hit herself in the face. When reality didn't change she sighed.
“So are you going to tell me where you're from or should I just guess?” Alec asked, and Blue nodded.
“Right,” Blue replied. “I'm from San Francisco,” she explained, and Alec nodded at last.
“Siblings? Pets? Scamps is my only pet,” Alec explained. He was freaking her out, seeming so normal with such a strange room.
“I have an older sister,” Blue mumbled, “and a turtle.”
“Do they have names?” Alec questioned, causing Blue to shrug again. That rat was preening itself...then it suddenly turned to her with this murderous look in its eyes. She was too scared to remember what they were even talking about, much less a name. She could swear there was an evil little glint in its eyes as it stared at her. “No?” Alec questioned. Blue shrugged again.
“I think maybe their names are Red and Bellykins,” Blue offered up. She wasn't entirely sure, but something in her memory told her that. Certainly her sister's hair was Red, and her turtle had a big belly. Those seemed like their names, anyway.
“Your name is Blue and your sister's name is Red?” he questioned. Blue nodded as Alec shot her a confused shrug. “Well that's your parents prerogative, yeah?” he mumbled. Alec continued to attempt conversation while Scamps made evil eyes at Blue. Blue glared, trying not to show the rat her fear. She continued to glare at it as Alec asked, “So why did you move here three weeks into the semester?”
“I was on the Internets...,” she mumbled, stopping mid sentence as the rat bared its teeth to her.
Alec glanced down to the rat, which immediately closed its mouth and began looking innocent, then looked back up at Blue, “On the Internet, and...?”
“Huh?” Blue mumbled, then understood, “Right. I was looking through the Internets, and I came across the application for this school. Then I decided, why not apply? And that was how it worked.” It was only part of the explanation, but that rat was just unnerving. “A-anyway,” Blue said, still staring at Scampers, “why did you leave Britain?” Alec stared at Blue as he appeared to be thinking.
“Are you talking to me or Scamps?” he asked finally, as if he honestly thought she may be talking to his pet rat. Blue replied that she was referring to Alec, and he replied slowly, “I moved here because it was necessary...” Blue blinked, but before she got to continue Alec shot her a look reflecting his rat's look and she shut her mouth.
She took the time to settle in, lying back on her still empty bed. As she waited for her parents to show up with her things (why had she trusted them to look after her stuff again?) she got lost in her imagination, dreaming this time about a scary hobo named Scamps who was trying to murder her unicorn. Her unicorn was pretty ferocious though, so it turned into an all out battle with forts and everything. Blue wasn't sure when it started snowing, but Uni the unicorn was strangely good at making snowballs and snow forts. Even though she didn't even have hands. Just as Uni was launching a snowball in the face of a young pick pocket (on the hobo's side) she was brought back to reality by loud knocking on her door.
She opened the door to see her parents all wiggly and embarrassing and standing. “Hey,” she said, as they filed in with boxes. Her parents didn't so much talk. Mostly they grunted and made strange clicking noises. Or at least, that was all Blue heard. Some people told her they were totally normal, but she was pretty sure they came from some African tribe where they spoke in clicks and grunts. But maybe that was just her.
“Where do you want us to put it?” her mom asked.
“Slorp -click- -pop- behkik?” Blue asked. She tried to communicate with them, she really did.
“This again?” her dad asked, looking questioningly at her mom. “Just set the stuff here and she can sort it out on her own,” her dad grunted. Blue tried to quickly decipher his words into English to translate back to him.
“Yyrgha -click- -click- smauu -pop-?” she said, as Alec jumped up from preening Scamps to meet them.
“Hey,” he said, “ali...I'm Alec Potts. Pleased to meet you. This daughter of yours is certain to become a brilliant mate of mine.”
“Are you her roommate?” her mom asked, as if aghast.
“-click- -click- Slock dimpo glork,” Blue tried again. For some reason her words weren't getting through. Her parents, as well as Alec, simply stared at her until she threw her arms up into the air, “I try and I try! But no matter how many clicks I make they just look at me like they don't understand! I give up!” She flopped over onto her bed face down, making a frustrated noise.
“Yeah, right,” Alec said, “I'll be her roommate, but I also plan to be a good mate,” the parents looked at him as if he meant in the animal way but he forged forward with his explanation, “so I won't do anything with her. Platonic zone,” he drew a box around himself. “No interest in American girls, anyway. I have a girlfriend back in England.”
“Well,” her father muttered, looking to his daughter, who was still angrily huffing into her empty bed, “I could see not wanting to hit that.”
“Oh sir, I definitely will not hit that,” Alec assured. Mr. Blue nodded as he and Mrs. Blue bent over to give Blue farewells.
“We love you honey, call whenever you need anything,” Mrs. Blue said.
“Don't forget about your parents when you become famous,” Mr. Blue teased, smiling at his daughter.
“-click- Glork -click- -snort- dee -pop- dagu!” Blue shouted, sitting up and hugging her parents. Alec smiled a bit crookedly.
“I think that means, 'I love you too, and I shall miss you to bits. Keep in touch, Mum and Dad,'” he explained. They smiled at him and nodded before giving their daughter a couple more hugs and waving goodbye. After they left she started arranging her things to make her half of the room more comfortable. She finally finished in time for dinner, and went off to eat, sure her days would be very interesting at this new school.
Yep, chapter two. I changed maybe a little bit. Not much that I know.
Yaaay! :D
